These are so versatile, cheap and
delicious, you'll want to keep them in the
house all the time. Shop around to find the
cheapest brand and then buy a couple boxes
at a time. When the children come in from
outside begging to be fed, it's time to go
into action.
Pizza Snacks: Drop a small dollop (1/2
teaspoon) of spaghetti sauce on each
cracker, and top with mozzarella cheese. If
desired, a thin slice of hotdog can be added
too. Microwave to melt the cheese.
Confetti Crackers: Spread the saltines with
peanutbutter or creamcheese, then let the
kids choose from a variety of topping to
decorate them with. Try shredded coconut,
sunflower seeds, raisins, peanuts, granola,
chocolate chips, banana slices, small bits
of jelly, shredded carrots, leftover holiday
candy purchased on sale, thin apple wedges,
grapes, canned pineapple chunks, and
anything else which tickles your child's
fancy.
Cracker Stackers: Most folks have already
thought of this one, but it is so good it
bears repeating. Cut cheese into small
squares. Cut baloney, other lunch meat, or
boiled eggs into small slices. Spam is very
good for this, I use a cheese slicer to make
small thin slices. Arrange the meat and
cheese on a plate with a lot of saltines.
Allow the kids to make sandwiches, stacking
them up as they see fit. If desired you can
offer mustard or mayonnaise to go along with
it. Tuna or chicken salad is also good on
crackers, but I prefer it with pickle slices
instead of cheese.
