Dining On A Dime and Homemade Mac & Cheese – HBHW Newsletter

October 6th, 2010

Editorial

Hello again and welcome to another edition of the Hillbilly Housewife Newsletter. We’ve got another exciting offer from our good friends at LivingOnADime.com.  This week Tawra and Jill are offering their popular Dining On A Dime ebook for more than half off. I hope you’ll take time to check this out if you haven’t already done so. I love it and am using quite a few of the recipes and frugal tips in there (there are over 1,000 of them in the book) and I think you and your family will enjoy them as well.

When you, as a homemaker, decide to cut expenses by limiting the number of snacks, meals out, and relying on non-meat meals more often, you may hear some moans and groans.  That’s natural for kids get frustrated with the changes you’re making in their routine.  Please be sure to scroll down to the featured article this month to see how you can get your entire family on board with your new food budget.

The inspirational quote and story I’ve chosen this week are about making the most of, and even learning from, obstacles.  It’s all about attitude.  I hope you’ll take a moment or two out of your busy day to read and reflect on this week’s quote and story.

Last but not least, I want to tell you about a fun little contest. Front Porch Ideas and More is hosting an Autumn and Halloween Porch Decorating Contest during the month of October. If you like decorating your porch this time of the year, you will enjoy all the ideas that Mary and Dave have for your porch. You could win a $100 or $50 gift certificate from Plow & Hearth. Learn more about their fun contest here: Autumn and Halloween Porch Decorating Contest.

Those are my thoughts this week. As always, I welcome your comments and suggestions. Feel free to email me at susanne@hillbillyhousewife.com

Warm Regards,

Susanne – The Hillbilly Housewife

It’s pretty hard to save money on your grocery budget if the whole family is not on board.  That’s why when you decide to crunch your budget numbers, you have to include the entire family in the process.  Knowledge is power and when everyone feels they have a piece of the budget decision, you get more cooperation.  Please take a moment to read this week’s featured article to find out more:

Frugal Living Is A Family Affair

Recipe Sharing

Saving on your food budget doesn’t have to mean giving up all your favorite “convenience foods.”  But, you don’t have to buy those prepackaged mixes.  Here’s one of the recipes we feature in our Convenience Foods section of our recipes. I hope you’ll find time to try this delicious dish soon:

Easy Macaroni And Cheese:

  • 1 lb box elbow macaroni
  • 1 lb extra sharp cheddar cheese (grated)
  • 1/2 lb butter
  • 1 qt milk
  • salt

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Boil macaroni until it is fork tender and drain.
Grease a 2 quart baking dish. Place a layer of macaroni. Cut butter into small pieces and place some on top of macaroni followed by a layer of cheese.
Continue until your dish is full. Pour milk on top and bake for 1 hour.

Inspirational Story

Our Attitudes
~Charles Swindoll~

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.

Attitude, to me is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do.

It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company… a church… a home.

The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.

We cannot change our past… we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable.

The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude.

I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.

And so it is with you… we are in charge of our attitudes.
